Once you will come to the oldest mining town in Slovakia located in the Stiavnicke mountains - one of the largest ranges of mountains of volcanic origin of the West Carpathians, you will be charmed with the rich history that the old mining tradition left in here. During the 18th century it was the third largest town in Hungarian Empire and the best-known centre of mining science and technology in Europe. Having a walk in the old town, you may see the most important places such as Old Castle, New Castle, four different churches, the Holy Trinity Square, The Town Hall, The Clapper house, old historical buildings of the rich burghers and the complex of buildings of the first technical university in the world. Not less impressive is the late-baroque chateaux in the nearby town Svaty Anton, the former residence of the aristocratic Kohary and Coburg, with original furnishings and an English Park. Â Banska Stiavnica together with the technical monuments in its environs were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993.
