Poprad is a developing city situated at the foot of the High Tatra mountain range. The High Tatras along with Bratislava are probably Slovakia's most famous tourist attraction and Poprad is a great base to explore this lovely part of the country from. The city itself was only created recently in the 20th century when four neighbouring villages decided to come together and form Poprad.
Only a stone's throw away from Poprad is Spisska Sobota.
Spisska Sobota is one of the best preserved historical settlements in Slovakia and one of the six ‘Royal Towns; established in the 12th century. The Town is on UNESCO's World Cultural and Heritage List and it appears that its main square has remained untouched for the past 400 years or so. Whilst there be sure to marvel on St. Juraj church which is the highlight of the square.
Other options for using your time well whilst in Poprad are either the train or hiring a car. There is a direct link to most of the other popular High Tatras resorts such as Tatranska Lomica or Stary Smokovec (for more info visit our Tatra Mountain section) via the Tatra Electric Railway (a special narrow gauge train). Alternatively, if you have use of a car you can see Levoca (a stylish town from the 13th century), Spis Castle (the largest Gothic castle in Europe) or the Dobsina Ice Cave. Of course, there are many other options but those listed before are just the must sees!
But if you aren't going to Poprad to take advantage of everything the High Tatras do offer the city can also keep you entertained. It has several bars, restaurants and cafés as well as galleries and museums. In actual fact, it is home to one of the oldest Slovak museums opened in 1886.
When it comes to winter time you can base yourself in Poprad for your Ski Holiday. If you are prepared to commute each day to your ski resort of choice this is fine, but if you prefer to be right in the heart of the ski region please see our Tatra Mountains section for better suited resorts.
