Home Destinations Slovakia Spis region

Spis region in Slovakia, holiday info,

The most beautiful part in the northwest of Slovakia is ready to offer you an unforgettable experience.

Spis belongs to counties that are rich on natural beauties and attractive historical and cultural monuments.

It is surrounded by four National Parks: The High Tatras, The Low Tatras, The Slovak Paradise and Pieniny with the Dunajec river.

Almost half of all the municipal cultural monuments in Slovakia are situated in the Spis region - mainly in the town of Levoca, Kezmarok, Spisska Kapitula and Spisska Sobota.

Let us to take you to the beautiful nature as well as to these historical towns.

Levoca will fascinate you with one of the most beautiful squares in Slovakia where the second biggest church in Slovakia, the church of St. Jacob, is situated.

In its unbelievable interior you will find very valuable wooden altars and wall paintings made by master Paul, among which is also the highest wooden, gothic altar in the world.

From the Marians Hill above the town, which is the far and wide best-known pilgrimage place you will have stunning views of the countryside.

Kezmarok, the town known as the treasure under the High Tatras, is full of historical monuments - the evangelical Wooden articled church (1717), New evangelical church (1894), the Lyceum (1776 - 76) with one of the biggest school historical libraries in central Europe, catholic Holy Cross Basilica (with the oldest parts from the 13th century), originally gothic town hall (1461), Redoute (cultural centre of Kezmarok), the castle or the Paulinius church.

Spisska Sobota, the most interesting and historically colourful part of the town Poprad will kindly surprises you with the peaceful atmosphere.

Up to the north borders with Poland you will visit the smallest national park in Slovakia - Pieniny.

One attraction of this area is rafting on wooden rafts down the biggest canyon in Central Europe, the river Dunajec canyon that is 11 km long.

In the village of Cerveny Klastor under the massif of Tri Koruny peak, is located a cultural monument dating back to the beginning of the 14th century: a Carthusian-Camaldolese monastery.

Further to the southeast the ancient castle of Stara Lubovna will welcome you. Although it had originally guarded the northern Hungarian border, it was for 360 years the seat of power of the custodians of the Spis areas that were temporarily given to Poland as a guarantee. It became famous for its numerous visits by the King.

How Slovak people lived in the past you can know in an open-air exhibition in the outer bailey of the castle. Eminent building is wooden church from Matysova from 18th century.

Second castle you can admire is the Spis Castle, which is one of the most extensive castles in the Central Europe. It is a dominant feature of the Spis region, beautifully placed in the countryside on a travertine rock.
In 1993 the castle together with the surroundings (Spisske Podhradie - village under the castle, Spisska Kapitula - old religious centre, the church in Zehra) were listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

You will certainly enjoy this trip.
