Poltava in Ukraine, travel,

It is still unknown when the city was founded. Baltavar Kubrat's grave was found in its vicinity, and its name derives from the title he, his predecessors and his successors bore. Though the town was not attested before 1174, municipal authorities chose to celebrate the town's 1100th anniversary in 1999, for reasons unknown. The settlement is indeed an old one, as archaeologists unearthed a Palaeolithic dwelling as well as Scythian remains within the city limits.

Poltava region is one of the most interesting places of Ukraine.

It is known to the whole world owing to the historical events (battle of Poltava) and it is also a spiritual depository that gave the world and inspired to creative work the following writers: M. V. Gogol, V.G. Korolenko, G.S. Skovoroda, O. T. Gonchar, D. Guramishvily, painters: N. A. Yaroshenko, G.G. Myasoedov, M. Bashkirtseva, Levitsky, scientists: M.V.Sklifasovsky, M. L. Dukhov, M. V. Ostrogradsky, V.V. Dokuchaev, pedagogues: A.S. Makarenko, V. A. Sukhomlinsky; Decembrists: Muravyovi-Apostoli, composers I.I. Dunaevsky, M. V. Lysenko and many, many others.

It is impossible to imagine Poltava region without M. V. Gogol, his famous village Dykanka, The Trinity church, St Nicholas church with family burial vault of princes Kochubey, village Gogolevo where the patrimony of Gogol-Yanovsky is situated, the city of Mirhorod, and, especially, Velyki Sorochintsi village. If you come to Poltava region at the end of august, you will have a unique opportunity to participate in the famous Sorochinski trade fair. Since 1999 it bears the status of the National trade fair. There you can purchase traditional handicrafts made by skilled craftsmen: Reshetilivka embroidery and rugs, Opishnya ceramics, you can watch the fascinating theatrical performance with characters from works by M. B. Gogol.

The great number of orthodox churches, monasteries, nunneries, cathedrals are the monuments of architecture and culture of ХVII - ХIХ centuries; they represent spiritual patrimony and historical value. The most interesting are Mghar monastery (Lubni) and Poltava nunnery (Poltava).

The great numbers of them are situated in Poltava, Mirhorod and Kremenchuk. Small motels and camping-sites, comfortable cosy cafes with national cuisine are at the disposal of travellers along the motor-way Kyiv-Kharkiv.

In the region there are 151 nature reserves, 117 nature monuments, 18 landscape monuments, 3 regional landscape gardens, arboretum and many others. There are many hunting areas in the region.
