Lithuanians and tourists enjoyed the exceptionally festive year of 2009. The country has been celebrating significant occasions during 2009 - with the official 1,000th birthday of its name and capital city Vilnius the European Capital of Culture combining to encourage foreign visitors to uncover more about the Baltic gem.

The year 2010 will be none less significant as Lithuania commemorates 20 years since the reinstatement of the country's independence from Soviet Union in 11 March 1990. Extensive programme of events will cement Lithuania as a major centre for arts and culture projects.

If you enjoy trips to the countryside to see spectacular natural landscapes, visit Lithuania. The stunning Curonian Spit and Lithuania's lovely national parks leave an indelible impression on every visitor.

The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius is the biggest and most beautiful city in the country. Vilnius was first mentioned in 1323 in the letters of Lithuania’s great ruler Grand Duke Gediminas, who invited craftsmen and merchants from all over Europe to settle here. Today it is a modern city with 542,000 citizens. The city has a stunning array of Baroque and Gothic architecture and one of the largest Old Towns in Central and Eastern Europe, which takes up 360 hectares and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
